Qui a fait le monde?
Qui a fait le monde?
Qui a fait le cygne et l’ours noir?
Qui a fait la sauterelle?
Cette sauterelle-ci, je veux dire --
celle qui a bondi hors de l’herbe,
celle qui mange du sucre au creux de ma main,
qui bouge ses mandibules à gauche puis à droite, plutôt que de haut en bas--
qui regarde autour d’elle avec ses énormes yeux compliqués.
Qui lève ses pâles avant-bras et se nettoie soigneusement la tête.
Qui déploie maintenant ses ailes, et s’envole au loin.
Je ne sais pas exactement ce qu’est une prière.
Mais je sais comment prêter attention, comment tomber
dans l’herbe, comment m’agenouiller dans l’herbe,
comment flâner et être comblée, comment errer à travers champs,
ce que j’ai fait tout au long de la journée.
Dis-moi, qu’aurais-je dû faire d’autre?
Tout ne finit-il pas par mourir, et trop rapidement?
Dis-moi, qu’entends-tu faire
de ton unique, sauvage et précieuse vie?
The summer day
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean--
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down--
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
With your one wild and precious life?
